History of the Sport
Originating in Finland. Tales have been passed down of a man named Herkko Rosvo-Ronkainen who, in the late 1800s, lived in a forest with his gang of thieves causing harm to the villages. Rosvo-Ronkainen his thieves were accused of stealing food and women from villages in the area, carrying these women on their backs as they ran away. .
Though the sport is often considered a joke, competitors take it very seriously.
Wife carrying contests are now seen in Australia, the United States, Hong Kong, Estonia, the UK and other parts of the world besides Finland, and the sport has a category in the Guinness Book of Records.

Rules
- The 'wife' to be carried may be your own, or the neighbour's, or you may have found her/him further afield; she/he must, however, be over 18 years of age.
- The minimum weight of the 'wife' to be carried is 50 Kg (110lbs)Several types of carrying positions may be used: piggyback, over the shoulder, or Estonian-style (the 'wife' hangs upside-down with her legs around the carriers shoulders, holding onto his/her waist).
- The only equipment allowed is a belt worn by the carrier and a helmet worn by the carried.
- Each contestant takes care of his/her safety and, if deemed necessary, insurance.
- The contestants have to pay attention to the instructions given by the organizers of the competition.
- If the 'wife' touches the ground with any part of her/his body the 'carrier' must stop and raise her/him up to carrying position before continuing. The judge may determine that the couple have to go back to where the 'wife' first touched the ground and restart from that point.
- The winner is the couple who completes the course in the shortest time.
- Heats may be involved depending on the number of entries.

A waiver must be signed by both participants prior to entry in to the race & entry fee paid. - Above all - have fun.
NOTE: Carrier and carried may be any combination of male/female participant. eg. 2 males, 2 females or 1 male/1 female
